Does this poem sound familiar to you?
An old man, going a lone highway,
Came at the evening cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.

  The old man crossed in the twilight dim-
That sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when he reached the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.

"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near,
"You are wasting strength in building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?"

The builder lifted his old gray head.
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."

The Bridge Builder has long been part of the Beta Theta Pi initiation ritual. And the commitment to helping those who follow behind us is perhaps more a part of our responsibility as Betas now than when we were actives. Many of us are in the position to help those actives and young alumni who come behind us make a more successful transition into their careers, just as Betas of old may have done for us. If one of us can provide a contact for a young Beta, it may inspire them to some day build a bridge for those who come behind him.

For that reason we have created the Psi Beta alumni referral network: Beta Theta Pi Psi LinkedIn. This platform includes a job board, which you can populate with internships, entry-level positions, and opportunities for career advancement that you are aware of or can open doors to. You can use the discussion board to pose career advice or simply present opportunities for real world networking when a younger brother needs it. This resource is not designed simply with our young alum in mind. We also hope our not so young alumni can make good use of it to connect with others in related professions.

If you are already on Linked In, just join the group by clicking the link below. If you are not, sign up at www.linkedin.com and join the group. Fill out your professional information, and help do your part in helping to build the strength of Psi Chapter.
